Welcome back, cowpokes and greenhorns! (Editorial note: I’m doing this a little early.)

Today is June 1, 2021. Do you know what today is? TODAY IS THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF POISON IVY GULCH’S LAUNCH! That’s right – it was one year ago today that we launched this webcomic. Poison Ivy Gulch has gotten off to an amazing start and an incredible year. We’ve picked up a number of fans, seen a lot of traffic to the site and have finished in the TOP 500 rankings on Top Webcomics since our launch.

Quite an achievement, isn’t it?

I’ll also let you in on some secrets. Poison Ivy Gulch was NOT the original name for my creation. An early name I wanted to use was “Pig Iron Peak” (I used that for the town Ace visited in April 2021) and “Lotta and Ace”. As a nod to the Spaghetti Western, other names I considered were “Pasta Western”, “Tortellini Western” and “Lasagna Western”. Another secret: the original protagonist was NOT going to be Lotta Doler…or Ace. I had a scout called Hunter North who was going to be the hero, inspired by the Roger Bollen Western comic strip Catfish. I had to dump the character as he just wasn’t working.

So Poison Ivy Gulch is one year old now. Many webcomics out there never make it past the first year. Here is to another great year! That’s it for now.

The Writer’s Shack April 2021

Hello, everyone! I am sorry we didn’t have a writer’s shack last month; with all the work on preparing my picture book Hilda & Richie for press, I had to make sure the book was ready. I’ll need to go through this process when the first Poison Ivy Gulch book gets done.

Anyway, I have a real treat in store for you this month. During the month of April of 2021, I will be doing the FIRST story arc of Poison ivy Gulch. It’ll be a fun little adventure and I may be doing more in the future. Little Ace will be the focus and he’ll be hitting the trail on a trip outside the gulch. What will happen? You’ll have to wait and see!

The Writer’s Shack February 2021

What a month! Poison Ivy Gulch is off to a good start for 2021. The three times a week update schedule (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) is working as I am pulling in more traffic.

What is more is that the success of my Kickstarter for my first picture book Hilda & Richie now makes a Poison Ivy Gulch book possible! As it is possible for me to raise US$1,000 to 3,000 on Kickstarter, that is a good sum for printing up a book collection of Poison Ivy Gulch.

Most likely a Kickstarter for a Poison Ivy Gulch book will happen next year in 2022. I need to get quotes from printers, check book sizes and decide what exactly should go in the book. As an extra, I am mulling putting in additional strips not available anywhere else.

The working title for the first book is Poison Ivy Gulch Saddles Up. This is subject to change though and I’ll have to plan carefully to make it a reality.

Out with the old…AND IN WITH THE NEW!!

It is a brand new year, 2021, and I have lots more in store for Poison Ivy Gulch! As a reminder, we are now going to updates three times per week. That’s right; we’ll have updates on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with the occasional Sunday strip on an irregular basis.

There will also be NEW cast members. The first will be a pretty saloon girl, Lorraine Hester. Next up will be a newspaper man. Third will be a character you’ve seen already, a snake named Gordon. We may even have more characters join the cast as my sketchbook is abuzz with ideas for more additions to the Poison Ivy Gulch populace.

We only launched last year back in June but we are off to an amazing start! Poison Ivy Gulch ranks high on Top Webcomics for a new entry and I aim higher; perhaps we may climb from the Top 400 or Top 500 into the Top 300. Plans are also underway for the first book collection of strips. That is slated for Kickstarter early in 2022.

Welcome back! It is the end of the year and what a year it has been for us. We have had an incredible year as we’ve had high rankings over on Top Webcomics! Plus we picked up many fans.

Something came in on the last stagecoach and it is from Dave Sim. Yes, THAT Dave Sim of Cerebus the Aardvark.

The writing reads to Max West and all the readers of Poison Ivy Gulch! Congratulations on the launch of your online strip! Hopefully the long-awaited comeback of the Western strip! Best wishes always!
